Full Description
The cobbles from both surfaces were sources from local outcropping glacial clays, rather than quarried (2). They are basic igenous rock consisting of basalt and a vesicular lava. In pit 9, several 18th-19th c. ceramic sherds were recovered suggesting that the disturbed cobbled road was deposited in the mid-late Victorian period, a likely date for the earliest tarmac resurfacing of the road (1)
