Element record MNT27871 - Linear anomalies discovered during gradiometer survey

Summary

A complex area of strongly positive linear anomalies has been recorded 140 m south of the known scheduled monument. Given their proximity straight form and perpendicular orientation of these anomalies it is likely that they are representative of Romano-British settlement activity associated with Margidunum to the north.

Full Description

In the westernmost areas of the survey, a complex area of strongly positive linear anomalies has been recorded. Most of the linear anomalies are 2 – 2.5 m wide, aligned on a roughly NWW to SEE by NNE
to SSW co-axial system. The anomalies are densely packed within both land parcels (60 m by 200 m and 140 m by 60 m respectively). It is likely that these anomalies are either ditches or building foundations of archaeological origin. Given the straight form and perpendicular orientation of these anomalies it is likely that they are representative of Romano-British settlement activity. This interpretation is strengthened by the immediate proximity of the Margidunum Roman Station 140 m
due north and the location of the land parcels straddling either side of Fosse Way. It is expected that these findings represent an extension of the Margidunum trading town further south than originally expected.
