Abstract/Summary

A complex area of strongly positive linear anomalies has been recorded 140 m south of the known scheduled monument. Given their proximity straight form and perpendicular orientation of these anomalies it is likely that they are representative of Romano-British settlement activity associated with Margidunum to the north. Additional linear anomalies identified 200 m east of the settlement activity are also likely associated with the scheduled monument. The eastern half of an expected enclosure was identified in phase 2. It is located near Shelton Village where a rectangular enclosure of presumed Roman origin was discovered during the National Mapping Programme of Nottinghamshire. It is possible that based on its proximity, shape and form, the partial enclosure may also be Romano- British in origin. A possible ring ditch of similar origin has also been identified. Numerous anomalies have been identified across the site. The anomalies include a possible enclosure, several possible former field boundary features, and several boundary ditches. Areas of ridge and furrow have been recorded across the site. Postmedieval agriculture is seen in the form of former boundaries that correlate with those recorded on first-edition OS mapping. The remaining anomalies are thought to be modern or natural in origin. The modern anomalies include ploughing, drains, services and animal feeding troughs. The site consists of a 60 m wide corridor across land between Gunthorpe and Balderton.
