Full Description
The large, deep pit, sub-oval in form and measuring 2.80m x 2.00m in plan and 0.76m deep. It had a flat base and two fills: the lower fill, reddish-brown clay, appeared to be redeposited natural and had a deeply dished upper horizon, but seemed more likely to represent upcast from the pit and/or material from its sides collapsing back in than to have been truncated by a recut. Worked flints were retrieved from both its fills: an earlier Neolithic utilized flake, which could have been used for cutting or possibly for piercing, from the lower fill and a broken, undatable flakefrom the upper fill, dark grey sandy silt.
A second small circular pit, was located some 10m to the south-east of the pit: at 0.56m in diameter x 0.20m deep it was smaller but slightly deeper than large pit, and was also undated.
Further extensions to the trench exposed a second large pit surrounded by a loose cluster of
four smaller pits. The large, sub-rectangular lay approximately 25m (centre to centre) to the south-east of pit.
