Description

The current works area, consisting of the Phase 6 zone with the zone previously designated as Phase 10, is located on the south side of the application area, to the east of Nottingham Road. The combined zones form a sub-rectangular plot approximately 14 hectares in area, with the long axis running approximately east-north-east to west-south-west. The evaluation was originally to consist of twenty-seven trenches, each measuring 30m x 2m. As the geophysical survey identified very few potentially significant anomalies in this area, the trenches were positioned in order to give the widest possible spread of sampling across the site. The archaeological evaluation encountered a low level of archaeological remains: further investigation was considered to be required only in two places, where the existing evaluation trenches were extended into targeted excavation areas, forming a single seamless mitigation programme. The very low density of archaeological features and the paucity of artefacts suggest that the site was peripheral to settled activity of any period. The evaluation uncovered: A small pit (south-west corner of area) - finds included A large deep pit and a single small, circular pit, surrounded by a loose cluster of four smaller pits, (eastern edge of site) - finds included in large deep pit A recut ditch (centre of the site) - NNW-SSE orientation A single linear feature, potential medieval furrow (centre of the site) - E-W running A singular linear feature/ditch (centre of the site) - finds included A shallow linear feature (south-west area of site), potentially the base of a medieval to early post-medieval strip-cultivation furrow, orientation difficult to determine Most features were undated.
