Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation consisting of 25 trenches was carried out on land within the Phase 6 area of works of the Fairham Pastures development, to the south of the town of Clifton and east of Barton in Fabis, in the Borough of Rushcliffe in Nottinghamshire, in order to ascertain its archaeological potential prior to development. The results of the archaeological evaluation informed a second phase of archaeological mitigation, in which two of the evaluation trenches were extended into targeted excavation areas.
Archaeological investigation in advance of development in the Phases 1 to 5 zones recorded evidence of occupation from the later prehistoric period to the Romano-British period, including probable Iron Age and Romano-British settlements, a Romano-British pottery kiln, a cremation cemetery of probable Bronze Age date and long-distance landscape boundaries in the forms of pit alignments and ditches, ranging in date from the Neolithic period to the Romano-British.
The archaeological evaluation encountered a low level of archaeological remains, with datable features found only in two areas at opposite ends of the zone. At least one of a loose scatter of pits exposed in the Trench 26 excavation area was probably of Neolithic date, while a single Iron Age pit was excavated in the Trench 5 area. The very low density of archaeological features and the paucity of artefacts suggest that the site was peripheral to settled activity of any period, and the coincidence of complex archaeological remains with areas of higher ground in previous works phases suggests that this lower-lying land would have been undesirable as permanent habitation or for any activity associated with settlement from the Neolithic period through to the Romano-British period.
