Full Description
At the southern end of the trench was an east to west aligned linear feature, approximately 2m wide and 0.4m deep, and probably a former boundary ditch. This contained three naturally accumulated fills.
Two fragments of animal bone were recovered from the middle fill.
This feature had been recut, 2.6m wide and 0.5m deep, the fill of which was a friable mid brown clayey silt. Two sherds of pottery recovered from the reut fill dated to the 16th to 17th century and fragments of post-medieval roof tile and brick, asheep/goat mandible and a corvid (crow) bone were also recovered. A subsequent further recut, could be seen. Measuring 2.6m wide and 0.33m deep, this contained a dark brown silty sand, and was sealed by the topsoil.
The linear feature identified by the geophysical survey in the northeast corner of the site corresponded to a large east to west aligned ditch, likely a former boundary feature, also shown on historic mapping from at least the late 19th century. Dating evidence from the feature comprised two sherds of 16th to 17th century pottery from the recut of the feature, suggesting that the ditch served as a boundary since at least this date.
