Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land at Moorbridge Road East, Bingham, Nottinghamshire, in advance of the submission of a planning application for an industrial development.
The site is situated in an area of archaeological interest with a prehistoric henge monument preserved beneath clay capping c.200m to the west, and the Roman Fosse Way passing 300m to the northeast. A possible Anglo-Saxon burial was found nearby in the 19th century.
A geophysical survey by magnetometer of the site in 2017 identified significant areas of magnetic disturbance, generally around the margins of the site, caused by fencing and other buried material. A possible positive linear feature was identified towards the northeast corner of the site, representing a former boundary shown on historic mapping.
The evaluation comprised the excavation of five 25m long trenches across the proposed development area targeted on anomalies identified in the geophysical survey.
The trenches revealed a number of archaeological features spread across the site, with only one trench being archaeologically sterile. Most features were undated pits and ditches, with the only feature from which dating material was recovered comprised a ditch producing pottery of 16th to 17th century date, which corresponded with a former field boundary and geophysical anomaly.
