The proposed development area is located off Moorbridge Road East, Bingham, Nottinghamshire, in the administrative district of Rushcliffe Borough Council. It is situated c.13km east of Nottingham, and c.0.4km north of the historic core of Bingham. The site is an irregular area of waste ground of approximately 1.9 hectares. The trial trenching strategy comprised of five trenches each measuring 25m long by 1.8m wide. The trial trenching revealed a small number of features of archaeological interest. The linear feature identified by the geophysical survey in the northeast corner of the site corresponded to a large east to west aligned ditch, likely a former boundary feature, also shown on historic mapping from at least the late 19th century. Dating evidence from the feature comprised two sherds of 16th to 17th century pottery from the recut of the feature, suggesting that the ditch served as a boundary since at least this date. A ditch also broadly corresponded with the line of a north – south boundary shown on historic mapping from the late 19th century, disappearing from the maps between 1956 and 1967. Other features revealed included a number of linear features and pits in, with one trench being devoid of finds or features. All of the features were undated, producing no more than very occasional scraps of animal bone. This suggests they represent boundary features and possible quarry pits well away from any focus of settlement activity. The lack of dating evidence limits the possibility of any further interpretation, although it is noted that a ditch, at the north end of a trench is on a different alignment to the boundaries shown on historic mapping, suggesting it may conceivably be of an earlier date.
