Full Description

The topsoil layer, comprised a light grey-brown silty sand with frequent root disturbance, small charcoal and limestone fleck inclusions, up to 0.30m thick. Pottery finds retrieved from this deposit have been identified as 19th- to early 20th century. Beneath this topsoil was subsoil, a mid-grey-brown sandy clay with frequent limestone flecks and occasional small-rounded stones, exposed at a depth of 0.30m. Within this, a number of early 13th to early 14th century pottery sherds were recovered, mostly Nottingham Light Bodied Glazed ware, all abraded.

1) Black-glazed wares - Jar/Bowl - 1 sherd - 27g - Base - Late 17th to 18th

2) Coal Measures Orangeware - Jar/ bowl - 1 sherd - 4g - Base Sherd

3) Creamware - Form Uncertain - 1 sherd - 7g - Base - Burnt

4) English Porcelain - Tea cup/ bowl - 1 sherd - 4g - Rim - Handpainted blue design

5) Late Earthenwares - Garden pot - 1 sherd - 5g - Base Sherd

6) 19th-century Buff ware - Jar/ bowl - 2 sherds - 1 vessel - 24g - Base + BS

Subsoil potter sherds:

1) Nottingham Light Bodied Glazed ware - Jug/ Jar - 3 sherds - 3 vessels - 18g - Base Sherd - Abraded

2) Nottingham Light Bodied Glazed ware - Jug - 4 sherds - 1 vessel - 70g - Base Sherd + Rim - Abraded

3) Nottingham Splashed ware - Jug - 1 sherd - 11g - Base Sherd - Abraded
