Description
The site lies on the northeast side of Screveton Road, towards the centre of the village; north of The Old Barn, adjacent to the village hall. The area of the plot is c.0.53 acres, although the new dwelling will occupy only the east end of this, set slightly back from Screveton Road to allow for off road parking etc. Previously the site was part of the garden to The Old Barn.
Groundworks excavations were carried out using a small JCB excavator, fitted with a variety of buckets; initially, level reduction stripping across the entire site, followed by the excavation of construction and service trenches to the desired depth or when a stable natural deposit was reached; between 0.50m to 1.5m below existing ground level.
Medieval pottery was recovered from the subsoil, and a single feature was exposed during the monitoring programme.
The only a single archaeological feature exposed during the monitoring rogramme was a post medieval ditch.
From the evidence, it seems unlikely that the medieval settlement extended into the site area itself, although the occurrence of abraded early 13th to early 14th century pottery sherds does appear to indicate some form of medieval activity close by. It seems likely the site was used primarily for agriculture during the medieval period, after which it was enveloped into the garden area of the Old Barn.
