Full Description

Although irregular an only partially exposed, this feature was squarish in plan and had shallow irregular sides and base. The dark single fill was charcoal rich which indicates a deliberate deposition of material; mineralisation in this deposit may be due to the mixed geology in this area. This deposit was also rich in artefacts, with pottery, flint, burnt flint and bone and fired clay all recovered from this feature. The pottery has been identified as Beaker pottery from the late Neolithic – early Bronze Age. The collection of flint from this feature comprised 11 worked artefacts, including flakes, and awl and a scraper and a possible core or rejuvenation flake; approximately half of the assemblage was identified as most likely earlier Neolithic in date, with the others (mainly flakes) were undiagnostic and could not be dated. Among the 20 animal bone fragments only 1 could be positively identified – sheep/goat - while the fired clay was a hand pressed wedge that may have had either a domestic or small-scale industrial function. Small quantities of rushes were noted in the environmental sample taken from this deposit, with no cereals being present.
