Description

The site lies on the north side of Grantham Road (A52) on the periphery of Radcliffe on Trent. The north side of the site is defined by the railway line, and the east by the driveway to Spellow Farm. The modern cul-de-sac of Hudson Way lies to the west. The site comprises a little over 11 hectares of former agricultural land divided into three fields. There is a once natural stream now artificially channelled running approximately east-west along the field boundary through the site. The evaluation comprised thirty-two 50m x 1.80m trenches that are arranged across the site to investigate the geophysical survey results. Only four trenches exposed horizons with archaeological origins. The remaining twenty-eight were either void of any archaeological features, or exposed only furrows or clearly modern features that were not recorded further. The remnants of furrows were noted across the site noted as cutting deeply into the alluvial silt. These furrows were on an approximate north-south alignment that is consistent with the furrows surviving as slight earthworks in the smaller field at the west end of the site. LiDAR tiles of the area do not record any comparable earthworks elsewhere within the site nor to the north of the railway line. Six trenches revealed features that were clearly modern and were therefore not further recorded. In some places these features accounted for geophysical anomalies, for example in one trench where a modern pit cut from the topsoil with a fill still loose was noted towards the centre of the trench where the magnetic anomaly had been noted. The first four trenches lay at the west end of the site, in a field where there was extensive magnetic disturbance interpreted as relating to post-medieval brick production shown on early 19th century mapping. No structure was observed however in one trench two concentric rings backfilled with rubble and ash were sketched, interpreted as being the robbed-out foundations of a possible kiln. As modern industrial features these were not excavated.
