Abstract/Summary

A program of evaluation trenching was undertaken on land north of Grantham Road, Radcliffe on Trent, to inform an application for residential development. The site lies on the periphery of the modern settlement with disperse archaeological monuments in the surrounding area. The evaluation has identified the first evidence of early prehistoric activity in the area – a scattered group of pits/postholes some yielding Neolithic and Bronze Age pottery, flint, burnt animal bone and fire-cracked stones found in two of the trenches. Undated features were found in a further two trenches. Ridge and furrow was recorded across the site. This is consistent with earthworks in the field at the west end of the site.
