Full Description

A total of two joining base sherds weighing 95g from the base of a fairly substantial vessel were collected from subsoil layer. The sherds are made of coarse fabric containing medium to very coarse quartzite inclusions, these being especially large on the underside of base. The fabrics compare well with Later prehistoric pottery of Post Deverel Rimbury Later Bronze Age to Early Iron Age date found at Thorpe on the line of the A46 dated to the 10th to 8th/7th centuries BC.

A sherd of medieval pottery weighing 6g was recovered from the same subsoil layer. The pottery is fragmented and highly abraded. It is a sand tempered fabric with angular grains of quartz as well as sub-rounded calcareous and rare ferruginous inclusions. The sherd has a grey core and buff/grey surface. The sherd is unglazed but there is a buff-coloured slip apparent on both internal and external surfaces. The sherd is likely to be Toynton Medieval ware and from a jug dating from the 13th to 15th century.
