Full Description
Upon excavation, a field dominant boundary was found to be made up of two closely set, parallel ditches. One ditch was the westernmost of the pair; it had a āVā-shaped profile, measured up to 2 m wide by 1.3 m deep and contained a dark brownish grey silty clay, with a primary fill of redeposited natural (mid-reddish brown silty clay) visible in some interventions.
The easternmost feature had a more rounded bowl-shaped profile, measured up to 2.3 m wide by 1.1 m deep, and was filled with mid-brownish grey silty clay. This ditch appeared to cut through, and therefore stratigraphically post-date, ring ditch.
Very few plant remains were present in the bulk samples taken from these features, although a few charred grains of emmer wheat were recovered from westernmost ditch.
Considering how closely they were set, the ditches are unlikely to have been co-existent, but it was not possible on site to determine a sequential relationship between the two as their fills merged where they overlapped. These two features returned a modest artefactual assemblage comprising 211g of pottery and 749g of animal bone.
Potentially part of a field system.
