Full Description
The trench was located south at the southern end of the Site and was oriented east to west. Two features were recorded from this trench. North to south aligned ditch had a u-shaped profile formed by gradually sloping sides and a concave base. This feature truncated the substratum. This was intentionally backfilled by a firm, greyish-red silty-clay with moderate lignite inclusions from which two sherds of post-medieval pottery were recovered. It appears to represent a former field boundary shown on historic mapping from at least 1885 to at least 1968.
One ditch was subsequently truncated by a large, modern, oval-shaped pit, which was deliberately backfilled by a modern, firm, mid-greyish-brown silty clay. This fill contained fragments of modern ceramic building material (CBM), none of which were retrieved as finds due to their modern nature.
