Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological trial trenching was undertaken at Southfields Farm, Toton, Nottinghamshire. The works were undertaken as a condition of planning approval for the development of two new battery storage systems on the Site.
Evaluation works consisted of the excavation of six 50m x 1.8m trenches across two fields within Southfields Farm. These fields had previously been subject to geophysical survey and the trenches were located to investigate a number potential archaeological features which were identified. Excavations took place between the 13th and 17th of March 2023.
Features were found in four trenches. Only one feature identified during this evaluation correlated with the features identified during the field survey. Features representing later post-medieval to modern field boundaries, as shown on historic mapping, were identified on the Site, with 18th-19th century pottery from one of these features. The only other features identified were a large modern pit and tree throws.
