Full Description
The ditch extended eastwards from the west of the excavation area for approximately 40m, at which point it turned to a south easterly alignment, and continued for a further 30m, at which point it terminated where 2 phases meet. The ditch had steep, evenly sloped sides, a fairly broad, flat base, and contained a single sandy silt deposit, from which no finds were recovered. Sondages excavated through the west to east orientated section of the ditch identified a re-cut, which also had steep sides and a flat base. The re-cut contained a total of three deposits, however no finds were recovered. No re-cut was present in the north-west to south-east leg of the ditch. These ditches directly correspond to the cropmarks identified in the field to the west, indicating a continuation of that field system. Although no dating evidence was recovered from these features, morphologically the cropmarks resemble a Late Iron Age/Romano-British enclosure complex, such as those also seen within Nottinghamshire at Gamston and Hoveringham Quarry.
