Abstract/Summary
A programme of archaeological strip, map and sample, with supplementary monitoring and recording was undertaken on an extension to the west of the existing Newington Quarry in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire.
Previous intrusive and non-intrusive archaeological evaluation of the site indicated that it was of low archaeological potential for the most part but identified possible remains of Iron Age metalworking near the western edge. Part of an adjoining cropmark complex was also known to extend on to the site.
Protracted archaeological works carried out during this phase of works at Newington Quarry encountered a generally low-density of archaeological remains across the entire subject area. Nonetheless, the results obtained are of some interest. The archaeology can essentially be summarised as the remains of a probable late Iron Age/Romano-British ditch, which displayed some evidence of re-cut along its length, a waste pit truncating the ditch, and a dense cluster of postholes, forming a possible structure.
