Description

The Newington sand and gravel quarry is situated in the Bassetlaw district of Nottinghamshire, and lies approximately 1.5km south-west of the centre of the village of Misson and 4km east of the town of Bawtry. The site is accessed from the Bawtry Road at a point just over 2km east of its junction with the A614. The western extension measures 16.9 hectares in area and was formally cultivated arable land; it consisted of two fields between Newington Road to the north and Slaynes Road to the south. Excavation areas were opened by machine under archaeological supervision to the first archaeologically significant horizon or the natural geology, whichever was encountered first. Archaeological deposits encountered were then cleaned and excavated by hand. A broad, toothless ditching bucket was used for machine excavation, and stripped areas and any side-cast spoil were scanned with a metal-detector to aid in artefact retrieval, with particular attention being paid to the possible presence of metallic industrial residues such as slag. Protracted archaeological works carried out during this phase of works at Newington Quarry encountered a generally low-density of archaeological remains across the entire subject area. Nonetheless, the results obtained are of some interest. The archaeology can essentially be summarised as the remains of a probable late Iron Age/Romano-British ditch, which displayed some evidence of re-cut along its length, a waste pit truncating the ditch, and a dense cluster of postholes, forming a possible structure.
