Full Description
Truncating a recut ditch was a large, sub-circular pit which displayed uneven shallow sides and a broad concave base. It contained a single silt-sand deposit, from which no finds were recovered. A sample taken from this fill proved interesting, with considerable evidence of foodstuffs being present in the deposit. This included significant quantities of fennel, in addition to turnip seeds, wheat, blackberry and elderberry, in varying quantities. These results indicate that the pit was backfilled with human food waste material, indicating evidence of domestic occupation within the vicinity.
Once again, a broad possible date range must be considered for this feature, with the seeds recovered being widely used from the Roman period up to the Anglo-Saxon period.
