Full Description
Potentially the most significant archaeology identified within one of the phases was at the very eastern edge of the excavation, just beside the haul road. A group of fifty-six post holes was identified and excavated. No finds were recovered from any of these features, although a single preserved stake was recovered (unfortunately assessed as not being suited to either dendrochronological nor radiocarbon dating). This was formed of oak heartwood and was of good quality. The wood specialist has indicated that the stake fragment would have derived from a timber with a diameter in excess of 120mm. The stake is currently undated; however, the specialist believes, due to the wood remaining fibrous, that it is not likely to date to earlier than the Romano-British period. The post holes themselves vary slightly in size across the structure, with diameters ranging between 0.15m to 0.35m. None of the post holes intercut with each other, which would seem to suggest that all the posts were contemporary with each other.
The seeds identified had much in common with those recovered from the ditch and pit, and suggest a broad possible date range from the Roman period to the Anglo-Saxon period.
