Full Description

The first ditch crossed the western part of the Site on a broadly north–south alignment for 68m. It extended beyond the northern limit of excavation; its southern terminal was sufficiently abrupt and well defined to indicate the boundary originally halted at this point, and had not been scoured away by ploughing or other types of truncation. Several interventions were dug across the ditch. It was found to vary in width between 0.74 m and 2.1 m and in depth between 0.15 m and 0.4 m, and possess a generally dish-shaped profile. The feature was typically filled with a single deposit of grey brown sand. The ditch shows good correspondence with a cropmark anomaly.

The second ditch lay 98 m to the east of the first ditch and shared its broadly north-south alignment. It was 65 m long and, like the first ditch, also extended beyond the northern limit of excavation. Seven interventions were dug across the ditch, the majority of which recorded a single greyish-red sand fill within a bowl-shaped profile. The ditch was a slighter feature than its neighbour to the west: it was 0.6–1 m wide and 0.1–0.3 m deep. The ditch has no correspondence in the cropmark data, perhaps because of its more modest dimensions. The ditch was crossed by an east–west ditch, although no relationship was discernible at their intersection.

Together the two ditches may have defined the western and eastern boundaries of a broadly square plot of land occupying at least 0.65 ha. The northern and southern boundaries of this putative field were not established.

A third ditch lay around 115 m to the east of the second ditch and also followed a north–south alignment. It was 76 m long, and extended beyond both the northern and southern limits of excavation. In its northern portion it was quite narrow and shallow (0.44–0.7 m wide by 0.1–0.18 m
deep) and had a bowl-shaped profile, whereas at its southern limit it was 1.6 m wide and 0.28 m deep, with a dish-shaped profile. Fills typically comprised grey-brown sand. The ditch crossed an east–west ditch, with the ditch recorded as the later feature, although the relationship was not particularly clear. The ditch showed signs of boundary renewal in its southern portion with two adjacent cuts, visible in one intervention. The ditch does not have a matching cropmark anomaly, again perhaps because of its modest proportions.

The second and third ditches may have formed a field with a potential land parcel of at least some 0.81 ha discernible.
