Description
The development area is located south of Bawtry, to the south of the village of Scrooby and north of Ranskill. It is located on the east-facing flank of a ridge overlooking the rivers Ryton and Idle. The confluence of these rivers lies some 2 km to the north.
The development area is bounded to the west by agricultural land and the A638 road, to the north by a field boundary, to the north-east by sand and gravel workings, to the east by field boundaries and to the south by arable fields. The total development area occupies approximately 11.3 ha.
The topsoil and subsoil were removed by a 360º excavator fitted with a toothless bucket, under constant archaeological supervision. Machine excavation proceeded in level spits until the archaeological horizon (which was the same as the level of natural geology) was exposed. Where necessary, archaeological features and deposits were cleaned by hand to aid visual definition. Archaeological features and deposits were sample excavated to sufficiently address the aims of the project. As a minimum this comprised a 10% sample of linear features (by length) and 50% of discrete features. A sample of natural features such as tree-throw holes was also investigated. Spoil derived from both machine stripping and hand-excavated archaeological features was visually scanned for the purposes of finds retrieval. Where found, artefacts were collected and bagged by context. All artefacts from excavated contexts were retained, except those from features or deposits of obviously modern date. In such circumstances, sufficient artefacts were retained in order to elucidate the date and/or function of the feature or deposit.
The remains encountered during the strip, map and record appear to tally with the pre-existing evidence, with boundary ditches defining a relict field system the principal archaeological remains identified. Some of the boundaries directly correspond with cropmarks recorded during aerial photographic survey. It seems clear therefore that the remains exposed on the Site and in its vicinity, are fragments of a much larger landscape of settlement and enclosure. Some evidence of recutting and superimposition of boundaries was recorded, suggesting a degree of time-depth to the remains, and belying the apparent ‘simplicity’ of the field system remains when viewed the air.
Other recorded remains include a quarry pit, a post-medieval boundary and a handful of minor discrete features of doubtful archaeological provenance.
