Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological strip, map and record on land to the east of the A638 at Scrooby Top, South Yorkshire. The work was undertaken in advance of proposed aggregate extraction, and in accordance with a condition imposed on planning consent. The strip, map and record area occupied 2.6 hectares (ha). Prior to the work, the archaeological potential of the Site had been signalled by cropmarks recorded by aerial photography, and the results from neighbouring archaeological excavations. Overall, the evidence indicates Romano-British field system remains are present within the Site and in the surrounding area. The remains encountered during the strip, map and record appear to tally with the pre-existing evidence, with boundary ditches defining a relict field system the principal archaeological remains identified. Some of the boundaries directly correspond with cropmarks recorded during aerial photographic survey. It seems clear therefore that the remains exposed on the Site and in its vicinity, are fragments of a much larger landscape of settlement and enclosure. Some evidence of recutting and superimposition of boundaries was recorded, suggesting a degree of time-depth to the remains, and belying the apparent ‘simplicity’ of the field system remains when viewed the air. Other recorded remains include a quarry pit, a post-medieval boundary and a handful of minor discrete features of doubtful archaeological provenance. Romano-British roof tile was found redeposited in later contexts in two separate parts of the Site. This suggests that a building of higher status and more ‘Romanised’ form than hitherto encountered in the Scrooby landscape may lie nearby. The finds assemblage is extremely modest, with a limited range of materials present. Ceramic building material, of Romano-British to post-medieval date, was the most common artefact type recovered. Five sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery were also collected. There is no evidence that the site is of any particular palaeoenvironmental significance. Overall, the remains are fairly typical for the period and region. The absence of any ancient feature types other than field boundary ditches undermines the Site's archaeological significance. The findings do, however, make a small contribution to improving the current understanding of patterns of local landuse in the past.
