Full Description

A sub-circular pit with a diameter of 1.10m and a depth of 0.75m. The pit contained three fills: a friable, mid orange brown, silty sand 0.40m thick which was sealed by fill, a friable, light brownish grey, 0.12m thick, silty sand with occasional charcoal flecks and small pebbles, which was in turn sealed by a friable mid grey silty sand 0.42m thick with occasional charcoal flecks and small pebbles.

One fill of the sub-circular pit contained 73 poorly preserved bone fragments. Most of the material was unidentifiable to species, although 16 fragments were identified cattle and one was identified as sheep/goat. All of the material was in extremely poor condition. An environmental sample from the context contained a number of plant macrofossils consistent with the natural accumulation of material from a surrounding rough and slightly damp, grassland environment. Thus, given the poor state of bone preservation and natural detritus within the fill, it seems probable that the pit was open to the elements for a relatively extended period of time, and it may have served as a refuse pit. No datable evidence was recovered from this feature.

Possible refuse pit.

A northwest-to-southeast oriented ditch with fairly steep sides and a concave base, truncated the uppermost fill of the pit. The ditch measured 1.30m wide and 0.62m deep and contained three fills: a friable, dark orange brown, silty sand 0.52m thick, which was overlain by a friable, mid yellow brown silty sand 0.15m thick, which was sealed by a friable mid yellow brown silty sand 0.16m thick.

A scapula from domestic cattle and two slipware potsherds dating from the late-17th to 18th century were identified from one of the ditch fills.
