Abstract/Summary
An archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken as part of a pre-planning application for a residential development, on land off Main Street, Farndon, Nottinghamshire.
An archaeological desk-based assessment has previously been undertaken for the site and indicated a high archaeological potential with evidence of later prehistoric activity in the area which lies close to the Fosse Way, a Romano-British road that runs between Lincoln and Exeter. Evidence of Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval activity has also been recorded within the area.
Three trenches were located within the footprint of the proposed building to assess the impact that the construction will have on the archaeological resource. No archaeological features were present within one trench. A second trench revealed a shallow ditch of probable post-medieval date. The ditch truncated an earlier refuse pit that contained numerous poorly preserved animal remains. A third trench contained an irregular-shaped, post-medieval rubbish pit. There was no evidence to suggest that the Civil War defences continued into the site.
