Description

The proposed development site itself is located on the south side of Main Street c. 280m east-southeast of Farndon church. The site is bordered by Main Street to the north, a trackway to the west, gardens to the south and open ground to the east. The trial trenching methodology consisted of the excavation of three trenches, each measuring 10m long by 1.8m wide. The trial trenching revealed the remains of post-medieval activity within the proposed development area, with the archaeological features encountered within two of the three trenches towards the northern side of the site. A possible refuse pit, intersected by a late 17th or 18th century ditch, was found within a trench. An 18th or 19th century, irregular-shaped pit, containing material representing possible clearance of the area, was found in another trench. It appears unlikely that the features relate to the Civil War defences observed to the east. All of the available material indicates that activity occurred from at least the end of the 17th century and nature of the features is more indicative of agricultural use.
