Full Description

Two small and shallow pits with animal bone were uncovered during the removal of the topsoil. They were located 2.10m apart, 2.5m immediately north of the site access road and 5m west of the back garden boundary wall of 22 Ploughmans Avenue. There is no dating evidence for these features but they are likely to be post medieval. The improved morphology of the bones, which although unfused are very large are indicative of a later date. The bones also show signs of butchery; they have been sawn, more typical of post medieval - modern periods, and are likely to date to the 19th -20th centuries. The bones have been identified as pig, and possibly the humerus of a horse.

The first pit was circular with concave sides with a moderate slope and flat base. It measured 0.30m (north-south); 0.33m (west-east) and 0.12m deep. It contained one single fill composed of mid dark brown grey silty-clay and containing a significant quantity of animal bone.

The second pit was oval with concave sides sloping on c.45º angle and a flat base. It measured 0.46m (north-south); 0.63m (west-east) and 0.23m deep. It contained one single fill composed of mid dark brown grey silty clay and rare charcoal inclusions. A significant quantity of animal bone, some of it articulated, was recovered from this pit.
