Full Description

One ditch, running northwest – southeast, towards the northwest end of the site, is a stratigraphically early ditch in the western half of the area of excavation. Part of the ditch is cut by one of the enclosures. No finds were recovered from the fill of the ditch but it is likely to be broadly contemporary with the enclosures. The ditch continues beyond the north-western boundary of the area of excavation and on the geophysical survey appears to be the western boundary of another larger rectangular enclosure.

A second length of ditch also truncated by one of the enclosures, curves from the southern corner of the enclosure for approximately 9m. The fill is a mid greyish-brown clayey silt with occasional small stone inclusions. One sherd of Roman pottery was retrieved from the silting fill of this ditch. This short length of ditch is also cut by a later ditch but does not appear to continue beyond it.

These two ditches, whilst cut by one of the enclosures, are likely to be an earlier form of the enclosure.

Cutting one of the enclosures was a ditch which ran northeast to southwest throughout the western area, curving slightly as it left the northern and southwest edges of the stripped area. The ditch is 1.46m at its widest point and the exposed length is approximately 50m. The ditch varies in depth between 0.26m and 0.43m. The fill is a compact silty clay, which ranges in colour between greyish to pinkish brown. From the northern end of the ditch, at the point it enters the trench section, a group of ten pot sherds were retrieved from its fill. There is a range of fabrics present but all are datable within the same period from the late Iron Age to early 2nd century AD. In addition to this assemblage, a single sherd was also retrieved from a fill at the southwest end of another cut. This sherd has a broader date range from c.AD 50 – 400.
