Description

The development site is located in Radcliffe-on-Trent in the administrative district of Rushcliffe Borough, Nottinghamshire. It is situated 1.3km northeast of the village centre and c.7.5km east of the centre of Nottingham. The site is approximately 0.25ha hectares and currently under pasture. The proposed strip, map methodology comprised the excavation of two areas either side of a hedge boundary, totalling 2502.29m2 in area. Each area was accurately located using a survey grade GPS receiving RTK corrections. A mechanical excavator fitted with a 1.8m wide toothless ditching bucket was then used to remove topsoil, subsoil and underlying non-archaeological deposits in spits no greater than 100mm in thickness. The process was repeated until the first archaeologically significant or natural horizon was exposed. The excavations at Grooms Cottage have confirmed the presence of a Late Iron Age to Roman rural landscape of local importance, within the hinterland of the Roman small town of Margidunum, and comprises the earlier enclosure and later enclosure, at the north end of a series of ordered enclosures. This system of enclosures appearing in the Late Iron Age is fairly typical in the region, with similar late Iron Age to early Roman rural settlement noted at places such as Aslockton. Although limited, there is good preservation for both artefactual and environmental evidence as demonstrated by the pottery, animal and archaeobotanical assemblages retrieved during this work.
