Full Description

Two trenches contained two circular pits which lay c 50m apart from each other. They contained no datable finds but did produce charcoal.

Within a third trench, were three parallel and adjacent, east/west-aligned, ditches. These contained no datable finds or charcoal, although one ditch truncated the southern edge of another, so these must be of different relative age, with the truncated ditch being later.

Several other trenches in this area contained other linear features that upon examination proved to be less well defined, and, except for a linear feature in one trench, which produced charred plant remains, were sterile.

Approximately 250m further to the south-west in two trenches which contained two shallow pits that contained charcoal and, in the case of the latter, small amounts of charred barley.

In a further trench, c 100m further to the west, was an east/west aligned ditch. This contained small amounts of charred barley, wheat and charcoal, as well as five abraded sherds of, possibly Iron Age pottery and a residual worked-flint core/retouched item. The cereal grains recovered are abraded and occurred alongside modern contaminants, are not suitable for radiocarbon dating.

Given the pottery and the lack of more recent finds, it is possible that the ditches in two of the above trenches could be outlying boundary ditches associated with the Iron Age Romano-British settlement outside of the evaluation area, to the northwest. In which case, the pits could have been associated with activities undertaken in this obviously little-used marginal area.
