During June to September 2024, a programme of archaeological trial trenching was undertaken on land to the south of the A17, north of the village of Coddington, Newark, Nottinghamshire. The trench evaluation comprised 115 trenches, excavated in two phases. Alongside the trench evaluation was an element of Strip, Map and Sample excavation during the construction of a roundabout c. 0.282 ha in size, located either side of the A17. The Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment for the site, drawing on the results of a geophysical survey had identified c. 1.2 ha located in the south-eastern corner of the site as having evidence for an Iron Age ‘clothesline’ type enclosure. There was no evidence from the geophysical survey that the dense Iron Age and Roman settlement excavated to the north extended into the site. No features were identified within the Strip, Map and Sample area. The trial-trenching broadly confirmed the veracity of the geophysical survey. The evaluation produced 5 sherds of probable Iron Age pottery and one sherd of unstratified Roman pottery from 114 trenches. Outside of the ‘clothesline’ type enclosure evidence was found for a single ditch likely to be of Iron Age date, a further undated ditch and four undated pits. The remaining features were of post-medieval or later date and related to agriculture or drainage and are of no archaeological interest.
