Full Description

Three trenches sampled geophysical anomalies that appeared to comprise two ditched ‘clothesline’ enclosures. The trenches sampled the linear anomalies in five places and, in each instance, demonstrated that they corresponded to five ditches. This confirms that the anomalies do indeed relate to surviving archaeological enclosures, although one trench, which sampled the interior of the southernmost enclosure, failed to detect any convincing internal features. The ditches contained two worked flints: an end scraper, from one ditch, and a flake, from another ditch, these are considered residual and do not date the enclosures. Animal bone was retrieved from four ditches and included that from a range of domestic species (cow, horse, pig and sheep). The bone could derive from settlement or agricultural activities associated with the enclosures. One ditch contained charred, abraded barley grains and charcoal, but also modern contaminants, so this material is not suitable for radiocarbon dating. The snail shells retrieved are from species that are not good indicators of environmental conditions.
