Full Description

A group of linear ditches, probably relating to re-cutting of the site boundary or agricultural activity during the post-medieval period, was identified in the west of the site.

One linear ditch identified in the western part of the site contained a single sherd of mid-sixteenth to seventeenth century midland yellowware pottery. It is possible that this ditch was part of a ridge and furrow field system. The piece of pottery may have entered the ditch through manure scattering in the sixteenth or seventeenth century when the land had an agricultural function. However, the tight spacing of the ditches in this part of the site, as well as their location next to the bank at the site boundary, is perhaps indicative of a boundary ditch rather than ridge and furrow.

A second ditch may have served as a boundary ditch when the area was agricultural land and a further feature is likely to have functioned as a pond similar to those depicted on historical maps a short distance to the southeast and northeast of the site.

Three further ditches did not contain any dating evidence. However, they were in either a parallel or perpendicular alignment to and have similar profiles with the first ditch. Therefore, these ditches probably broadly contemporary. Given that these ditches run parallel to the western site boundary (comprising a raised bank supporting a hedgerow) it is possible that the ditches represent drainage ditches associated with the site boundary.
