Description
Cropwell Bishop is situated c. 12km east-southeast of Nottingham in the Rushcliffe District of Nottinghamshire. Located in the southeast of the village, the study site is on the south side of Fern Road. The site was located within the front garden of the Manor House to the south of Fern Road.
The archaeological observation was undertaken during groundwork associated with the scheme, including the access roads and footings. In the northeast of the site, an area for a driveway was excavated to a depth of 0.24m. In the centre of the site a north-south orientated trench was excavated to a depth between 0.8m to 1.2m and a width of 0.6m. In the southwest corner of the site an area was excavated to a depth of 0.8m – 1.2m. In the western half of the site building footings were excavated to a depth of 0.6m. The monitoring and recording observed all aspects of the groundworks.
Seven archaeological features and two modern features were identified during thearchaeological observation. A group of linear ditches, probably relating to re-cutting of the site boundary or agricultural activity during the post-medieval period, was identified in the west of the site. A possible pond was also identified. Small quantities of post-medieval pottery and animal bone were recovered during the work.
