Full Description

Within one area, there is an unexpected structure which appears, from the perpendicular corners of an area of enhanced magnetic field, to have perhaps have been a building or set of buildings. If so, it would be very large, being more than 50m long north to south. Nothing has been identified at this location by the desk based assessment and there was nothing identifiable in the surface of the ground, e.g. earthworks or vegetation changes. The source of this clearly non-natural anomaly is therefore unknown and its location on the presumed line of the Civil War defences may or may not be coincidental although it does appear to be constrained by the present field boundary.

An area measuring about 53m NS and at least 24m EW has a striking rectangular shape dominated by medium strength anomalous fields with very weak signs of internal division. The southern edge is marked by a strong linear anomaly that may represent a different structural entity. The perpendicular corners, especially at the northern end, suggest this to be the site of a building and a large one; however, none of the anomalies are of sufficient strength to suggest reinforced concrete to present. It is harder to be sure whether brickwork is present because not all bricks are magnetic and there are no clear wall footings, for example.
