Description
A magnetic survey was undertaken as relatively rapid means of large area archaeological prospection in advance of construction. The survey area total approximately 30 ha.
Instrument: Geometrics G858 Magmapper caesium magnetometers
Resolution: Mean interval of 0.25m along tracks 1.0m apart. 4 / 6m swathe width
Civil War defences were thought to be present on the west side of the site. These defences were not found, however, a large possible building was found on their approximate line. Although there was no magnetic evidence for the Civil War defences thought to pass through the site within area A, however, their presence cannot be discounted because a large earthen rampart and ditch may have left no magnetic traces.
Elsewhere, little of obvious archaeological interest was found and a low density scatter of anomalies seems to represent debris and former field divisions. At the eastern end of the survey large quantities of debris were encountered alongside the motorway and thought to have been left over from construction. Just west of these a number of anomalies typical of large buried steel objects, or perhaps kilns, were found.
