Abstract/Summary
A magnetic survey was commissioned as part of a development proposal for land east of Newark with approximately 30ha selected as a sample. The western end of the area is thought to have had Civil War era defences for Newark passing through it.
These defences were not found, however, a large possible building was found on their approximate line. Elsewhere, little of obvious archaeological interest was found and a low density scatter of anomalies seems to represent debris and former field divisions. At the eastern end of the survey large quantities of debris were encountered alongside the motorway and thought to have been left over from construction. Just west of these a number of anomalies typical of large buried steel objects, or perhaps kilns, were found.
