Full Description
A number of discrete linear trends of a possible archaeological origin have also been located. As there is no evidence known from other records such as aerial photography or historic mapping in these locations on the site the origins of these cannot be determined. Therefore with no evidence to support or negate these findings, a definitively archaeological origin cannot be ascertained.
These discrete linear trends have been noted in a central band running north to south through the eastern part of two survey areas. The shape and size of these magnetic anomalies and features would appear to suggest an archaeological origin. They also appear to suggest possible enclosures or field systems and also closeby other curvilinear and rectilinear trends suggest possible settlement activity in the area. These trends comprise increased signals compared to the background values however poor patterning of these response values and weaker strength makes interpretation difficult and more tentative.
The possible enclosure or field system spans both areas. This feature for the most part is D-Shaped in appearance however in the north west has an unusual associated curve.
In the south east of the enclosure shape is another feature of parallel linear trends which also appear to run into the final area before fading out and reappearing in the south.
Where these linear trends reappear there are a number of stronger linear trends also adjoining to form a rectilinear shaped feature. Although clearly rectilinear, these do not appear to form a definitive recognisable archaeological feature; however, an archaeological origin is likely.
To the east are a number of tentative curvilinear features these again could be of an archaeological origin but are much fainter in appearance to the other anomalies.
Another set of weaker rectilinear and curvilinear features are noted in the south of the final area and again are suggested to be archaeological in origin. These are much more tentative however they are positioned within the same band of responses through the site and are likely to be associated.
A number of fainter and more tentative linears in the far east of the two survey areas may also be archaeological. They are however, much more likely to be related and associated with herringbone drainage patterns visible within the data set in this area.
