Description

The proposed development site is located on land off London Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire. The survey area covers an area of approximately 10.5 hectares (ha) across one single arable field and areas within the current garden nursery boundary. The gradiometer survey was carried out using Bartington Grad601-2 fluxgate gradiometers. Data was collected on an east-west alignment using zig-zag traverses, with a sample interval of 0.25m and a traverse interval of 1m. A total of 124 full or partial 30m by 30m grids were surveyed within the specified area, totalling an area of approximately 10.5ha. The gradiometer survey has identified two anomalies as definitive archaeology most likely buildings associated with agriculture possible barns. These were seen on historic Ordnance Survey mapping from the earliest first edition through to at least 1950. Through the western part of two survey areas runs a band of discrete linear trends that are possibly the remains of more ancient field divisions and possible settlement. There is no other evidence to support this however such as aerial photography or mapping evidence of finds recorded on the Nottinghamshire HER and therefore these cannot be definitively classed as archaeological in origin. A number of pit-like anomalies were also detected in this same band running through the survey area. Again, these are likely to be of an archaeological origin. A number of trends and anomalies of unclear origin have been noted in the result these are more tentative and could be of a number of different origins from non-archaeological; possibly geological or agricultural, as well as possibly/tentatively archaeological. Throughout two survey areas, clear agricultural trends have been detected in the form of a number of former field divisions, ploughing trends and drainage herringbone patterns. Throughout all the areas surveyed magnetic disturbance has been detected. There is also areas of disturbance along the edges of all the survey areas. Throughout the site isolated dipolar anomalies (iron spikes) have also been recorded most likely as a result of manuring or modern material and rubbish. In conclusion the geophysical survey would indicate that two survey areas have very little in terms of archaeological potential with no trends of anomalies identified which look to be of a potential archaeological origin. The main concentration of archaeology and possible archaeological remains is in the western end of the other two survey areas. The two known archaeological features are unlikely to be of great archaeological potential, and as discussed most likely to be agricultural barns. However the band of discrete trends of prospective archaeology running in a north south direction have more potential as these were previously unknown.
