Abstract/Summary
An archaeological geophysical (gradiometer) survey to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains was undertaken on land off London Road, Retford, Nottinghamshire. A total of 10.5 hectares were surveyed and the results of the survey have identified the following.
The results indicated two archaeological anomalies of possible agricultural buildings located on Historic first edition Ordnance Survey mapping of 1885.
A number of linear, rectilinear and curvilinear trends of discrete archaeology were however identified as a band running north south in the data. These would suggest a number of linear field divisions and possible settlement evidence of an archaeological origin. Also associated with these are a number of pit-like anomalies.
A large number of agricultural tends related to former field boundaries, ridge and furrow ploughing, conventional ploughing and herringbone drainage patterns were also identified.
A number of areas of magnetic disturbance most likely the result of modern activity were also recorded.
