Full Description

The red brick structural remains in one area are likely to represent the remains of 19th-century malthouses shown on the 1884 and 1914 Ordnance Survey mapping along the Chesterfield Canal. The substantial walls probably correspond to the eastern malthouse, while the brick floor, wall, three structure likely relate to the western horseshoe-shaped building shown on historic maps.

Both malthouses remained standing throughout the first half of the 20th century and are depicted on the 1950 OS mapping. By 1960, however, the western building had fallen into disuse and is labelled as a ruin, corresponding with the location of the brick floor. The eastern building appears to have survived for longer before its eventual demolition later in the 20th century.

These remains provide evidence for the industrial development of Worksop's canal frontage and illustrate the close relationship between the Chesterfield Canal and the town's malting industry during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
