Full Description

To the N of villa (M1848) , a detached stone building about which nothing is yet known. (1)
The final task was the exploration of an area of scattered stone and tile to the N of the main building. This material had been used to level a sunken area which had been used for some kind of ephemeral structure. No sign of any building remained, except for a clay floor at the bottom with two successive surfaces of Ro material on top; these last had rough hearths cut into them. There were no datable remains associated with the floors, but two pieces of clay pipe stem were included in the make up, as well as a few brick ends. Under this new site, a pit was dug to determine the depth to the natural. Beneath a cap of about 3ft of silted loam ... was found a deposit of peaty clay (with much environmental material - samples sent to BM and Inst Arch for analysis). At the very bottom were found substantial pieces of a Ro bowl, with crisp fractures. (2)
