Description

The proposed survey area comprises a c.3.5ha irregular shaped block of land, extending over two agricultural fields, approximately 2.5km to the west of the village. The geophysical survey consisted of a detailed gradiometer survey of approximately 3.5 hectares. The survey was undertaken in a series of 30m grids across the site. Instrument: Bartington Grad601-2 Dual Fluxgate Gradiometer Sample Interval: 0.25m Traverse Interval: 1.00m Traverse Separation: 1.00m Traverse Method: Zigzag Resolution: 0.01nT The geophysical survey has identified a number of features of archaeological interest. The survey has likely identified the location of both the Epperstone Villa and the Wood Meadow Villa. The geophysical anomalies are likely to suggest the survival of in situ structural remains as well as overlying demolition and abandonment deposits, along with the backfilled trenches of the previous excavations. Within the first field, the survey has also identified a large number of positive linear and curvilinear features which are likely to represent features forming part of the wider villa estate. Within the eastern part of the second field there are positive features which could represent enclosure or defensive ditches, or potentially ditches either side of a former trackway. These features could again relate to the Roman villa approximately 40m to the west, or could represent a different phase or activity within the area. Parallel positive and negative linear features aligned roughly north northeast to south southwest most likely represent a former cultivation trend, potentially ridge and furrow cultivation.
