Title Archaeological Evaluation Report: Geophysical Survey by Magnetometry on Land West of Thurgarton, Nottinghamshire
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2021

Abstract/Summary

An geophysical survey using magnetometry on land to the west of Thurgarton, Nottinghamshire, prior to the submission of a planning application for construction of a flood retention embankment. The site lies within an area of significant archaeological interest for the Roman period, with Wood Meadow Villa in the southeastern of the two fields, and Epperstone Villa in the northwestern field. The survey has revealed a number of features of archaeological interest. It has identified likely locations for both the Water Meadow and Epperstone Roman villas, as well as suggesting there is more extensive archaeological activity associated with the Epperstone villa than was initially identified through excavation. The survey also identified archaeological features at the southeastern end of one field, potential ditches which could represent enclosure, defensive or a trackway feature. These features could relate to the villa or may represent a different phase of activity within the field. Across one field, and located in the southern part of the other field, were linear features which likely represent a cultivation trend, potentially medieval ridge and furrow agriculture.
