Abstract/Summary

An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land off the A638 road between Bawtry and Ranskill, at Scrooby Top Quarry, Scrooby Top, Nottinghamshire. Three trenches were machine excavated under archaeological supervision to clarify discrepancies between aerial photographic cropmark and geophysical survey evidence. Definite archaeological features were observed in all three trenches. In particular, three ditches, probably field boundaries, were identified traversing the site in an east-west direction. The location of the ditches was consistent with features observed on both aerial photographs and/or geophysical survey. Some of the geophysical survey anomalies appear to have been caused by slight variations in the natural geology of the site. Discrete features were observed, but none could not be convincingly proven to be archaeological, and most were probably caused by animal burrowing, root action or undulations in the surface of the natural sand. The only stratified finds recovered from the site were from the upper levels of ditch fills and comprised an undiagnostic worked flint, and two fragments of perforated roofing tile of medieval period date. Previous investigations in the area suggest that the field system is likely to be of late prehistoric/Romano-British date, and it seems likely therefore that the medieval tile is intrusive in an earlier feature.
