Abstract/Summary

Watching brief by TPAT in 1994 at Kirkgate Co-op store, Newark, when floor levels were lowered prior to a new Post Office being opened. An area 18m x 13m in the middle of the building was affected and excavated by machine with toothless buckets. The whole area was lowered by 1.5m with a further strip excavated 0.6m below this for wall footings and four 2m square areas excavated around the roof pillars for foundations. 10th century kiln discovered, a ditch and a layer which may be on the line of the Saxon burh rampart.
