Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken on land off Bowbridge Road, Newark.
The site lies in a suburb of Newark, developed in the 20th century as the town rapidly expanded, the historic core of Newark is where Roman, Saxon and Medieval occupation was focused. Historic maps show a farm on the northern site boundary, and the second ring of defences encircling the town that were constructed as part of the Civil War besiegement of the Newark crosses the junction of Boundary Road and Bowbridge Road less than 100m southeast of the site. The site lies in a wider landscape of Prehistoric activity, with settlement and field systems recorded in the fields around Newark and neighbouring villages.
Of the five trenches excavated, two contained archaeological features. One trench contained a single modern pit, from which frequent modern waste was recovered. Whilst another trench contained an undated ditch and gully.
